An ‘Unforgettable’ Eurovision for Sweden: Marcus & Martinus win ‘Melodifestivalen’

Sweden’s Marcus & Martinus emerged victorious in the 2024 ‘Melodifestivalen’, securing their spot at the 68th Eurovision Song Contest with their track ‘Unforgettable’. Following six weeks of intense competition in Sweden, the dynamic duo clinched the win, earning the right to represent their country on the Eurovision stage in Malmö in May.

A total of 12 songs battled it out in the ‘Melodifestivalen’ final on March 9th, with both the public and international juries contributing to the voting process. Marcus & Martinus received overwhelming support, winning by a significant margin in both the public and jury votes, ultimately securing a commanding victory.

Sweden: Marcus & Martinus win Melodifestivalen 2024 with “Unforgettable”.

Their winning song ‘Unforgettable’ was penned by acclaimed songwriters Joy Deb, Linnea Deb, Jimmy “Joker” Thörnfeldt, along with the talented twins themselves, Marcus Gunnarsen and Martinus Gunnarsen. The track garnered an impressive total of 177 points, propelling them to the grand stage in Malmö.

As the host country, Sweden is guaranteed a spot in the Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final on May 11th. The Gunnarsen twins, hailing from Elverum, Norway, burst onto the music scene at the young age of 10, winning the Norwegian competition ‘Melodi Grand Prix Junior’ in 2012. Since then, they have achieved remarkable success, touring Europe, winning a Norwegian Grammy, and even triumphing in the Swedish edition of ‘The Masked Singer’ in 2022.

With three chart-topping albums in their native Norway, Marcus & Martinus have solidified their status as musical prodigies. Their earlier success in ‘Melodifestivalen’ in 2023 with the song ‘Air’, where they finished as runners-up to Eurovision winner Loreen, set the stage for their triumphant return and ultimate victory in 2024.A popular song has been streamed more than 14 million times so far.

The most streamed track on Spotify for the band is “Elektrisk,” which has garnered over 100 million listens.

Sweden debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1958 and is known for producing successful winners like ABBA, who won in 1974 with “Waterloo.”

Sweden has won the contest 7 times, tying with Ireland for the most victories. The latest Swedish win was in Liverpool in 2023, with Loreen winning for her song “Tattoo.” She is the first woman to win twice, having previously triumphed in Baku in 2012 with “Euphoria.”

As a result of Loreen’s victory, broadcaster SVT will host its 7th Eurovision Song Contest in May. Sweden’s Eurovision history is filled with wins and iconic performances, and since the introduction of Semi-Finals in 2004, the country has only failed to qualify once.

The Eurovision Song Contest is set to take place in Malmö, Sweden on May 7 (First Semi-Final), May 9 (Second Semi-Final), and May 11 (Grand Final) in 2024.
